Mold is an extremely common occurrence in Massachusetts. In can be found in office buildings as well as homes. When we talk about mold we are actually talking about a large variety of fungus species that exist. Generally speaking, mold decreases air quality by releasing spores into the air. Spores are how the mold reproduces and creates more mold. Depending on the species of mold in question, the spores can cause a variety of effects. The majority of mold is relatively non-dangerous, however, some molds can be more dangerous. This is especially true for people who are allergic to mold, have allergies, have asthma, or have other pre-existing breathing issues.
Signs Of Mold Exposure
Mold will often cause symptoms similar to an allergic reaction. These symptoms can happen to people who are allergic or not allergic. They can also happen to people regardless of whether or not they have any other allergies or pre-existing breathing issues. These symptoms include:
- Redness in the eyes
- Itchy eyes
- Watery eyes
- Coughing
- Wheezing
- Difficulty breathing
- Runny nose
- Rash
Of course, many of these symptoms can be caused by other issues or containments. Frankly, these symptoms are not automatically a sign that you have mold in your home. The best way to tell if you have mold is if you see mold, smell mildew, or if people in your building are experiencing these symptoms and no other known causes like dust, pollen, or dust mites are present.
How To Handle Mold Exposure
First, the best way to improve air quality is to circulate the air with outdoor air. This involves opening windows and using fans. A next step would be to clean your home to remove any dust and debris that might be causing the reaction. During the cleaning process keep an eye out for mold. If you notice any mold you should schedule a laboratory mold test. If you do not notice any mold, see if cleaning home causes the issues to subside. If you continue to have the issues, consider hiring a mold inspector. Using special equipment they can discover if you have mold within your walls or in hard to find areas.
Dangerous Mold Exposure
In some rare cases, the mold in your home could be a dangerous variety. If the mold is a dark black color or widespread throughout an area of your home, we recommend immediately hiring a mold inspector to test it. Dangerous mold can cause much worse reactions including intense difficulty to breathe. A mold inspector can detect, find, and identify the type of mold present.
