Debunking Five Common Myths About Asbestos

If you own a home or even a car from before the 1980s, you have probably heard of Asbestos. Banned by the United States in 1989 because of its known link to mesothelioma, asbestos is often the subject of many news articles. You may have even considered having your home, business, or other property checked for asbestos. Much like lead paint, mold, or radon, asbestos is one of the dangerous substances you want to make sure your property is free from. However, with the hundreds of news stories, online articles, and other media surrounding asbestos, there is a lot of misinformation on the subject. That's why we wrote this guide to correct these myths.

1. Asbestos Is No Longer A Large Threat

Although the United States banned asbestos in 1989, there are still many properties and cars that contain the material. Even though the connection between asbestos and health risks were known as early as 1929 it took over sixty years to ban new uses of the asbestos. It will likely take longer for asbestos to no longer be a cause of concern.

2. When Asbestos Is Found It Must Be Removed

Asbestos is a very dangerous product, however, it does not have to be immediately removed. As long as the asbestos is in good condition and will stay that way, it can remain unharmful. For this reason, many homes still have asbestos products in them, and it is important to check when buying a new property if the insulation contains asbestos. It is not illegal to own or sell a property with asbestos. If you plan to do any large renovations with your home, it is recommended that the asbestos is professionally removed first.

3. You Can Remove Asbestos Yourself

Although technically speaking, a general contractor could choose to remove asbestos, this is not recommended. Asbestos dust can cause mesothelioma, and it is best to have asbestos removed by trained professionals that are taking proper precaution.

4. An Air Filter Mask Will Protect You From Asbestos

Not every mask is rated for Asbestos. HEPA has a special designed purple mask with a filtration system built around asbestos removal. Even with that precaution, asbestos particles can attach to clothing, so it is best to take every precaution possible to avoid bring asbestos particles home with you.

5. Mesothelioma is Only Caused by Asbestos

There are multiple causes for mesothelioma other than contact with asbestos. Mesothelioma is also not a contagious disease. If someone you know has mesothelioma it does not necessarily indicate that they came in contact with asbestos. However, it is still recommended that you have a professional check for asbestos because it is the most likely cause.
