Mold and Your Appliances

It’s hard to imagine what our lives would be like without some of our most-used appliances: washing machines, refrigerators, dishwashers, etc. However, did you know that these appliances, which are supposed to help keep things “clean” are actually some of the biggest culprits for mold growth in your home? Since most of these appliances work with water, it's not surprising that the excess of moisture and humidity, combined with darkness and food, provide an ideal place for mold to start growing. Keep reading for tips on how to make sure your appliances remain clean and safe.

Washing Machine

Water that is trapped in the washer when the door and detergent drawers are closed can invite mold to grow. To avoid this, try to take laundry out of the washer as soon as the load is done, and always leave both the washer door and detergent drawers open. This allows them to air out and fully dry before the next load. If you do find mold growing, you can mix vinegar, baking soda, and water to wipe down areas of growth.

Refrigerators

Between the moisture, food, and lack of ventilation, mold can become a big problem in fridges. It usually begins to grow in between door seals, making quite the unsanitary environment for your food.  You can avoid some mold growth by wiping up spills immediately and cleaning your fridge at least once a month with vinegar.

Dishwashers

Filled with glasses that are still dripping liquids, and plates/bowls covered in food particles, your dishwashers is also a common spot for mold growth. It doesn’t see much daylight either, and mold loves the darkness. To clean your dishwasher and keep it free of mold, run an empty cycle at least once a month with only a cup of white vinegar on the top.
