The novel coronavirus has caused a lot of disruption in American's daily life. A large majority of the Massachusetts workforce has been asked to stay at home and limit outdoor interaction. This means that for many workers that can telecommute or that don't work in an "essential" business, they will need to adjust to working from home. In that vein, a large number of workers are worried about symptoms they develop as days progress. It is important to consult the CDC website to know which symptoms should cause for concern and which symptoms are average.
Mold Exposure Symptoms
As mold testers, we often warn Massachusetts residents on the dangers of mold exposure. Increased time at home with windows and doorways closed may increase the likelihood that you will develop symptoms from mold exposure. There is a large variety of mold types with the majority of the common ones being non-life-threatening. However, they can cause respiratory symptoms including:
- Sneezing
- Coughing
- Red itchy eyes
- Runny nose
- Sore throat
Mold spores attach to the mucus membranes found around your nasal passages and throat can cause irritation. Because these symptoms are mild and also very common (similar to a cold, allergies, or the flu) it is important to inspect your home for signs of mold. Check bathrooms and kitchens for mold, or hire a mold inspector to help you identify and get rid of mold in the home.
Asbestos Exposure Symptoms
Similar to mold, increased time in the home may lead to asbestos exposure. However, this is much less likely. Asbestos products have been out of circulation for about 70 years and unless you live in a building built before 1950 it is unlikely that you have asbestos insulation. Asbestos is linked however to mesothelioma, cancer that attacks the lungs. Mesothelioma causes the following symptoms:
- Dry cough or wheezing
- Shortness of breath
- Chest pain
These symptoms are closer to COVID19 symptoms but as mentioned above are less likely. Still, if you have not had an asbestos inspection and are worried about asbestos, you should have your home tested.
COVID 19 Symptoms
The novel coronavirus is currently being studied worldwide. For accurate and up to date information you should consult the CDC or the World Health Organization. Both of their websites can provide accurate information on COVID 19. As it stands the main symptoms include a dry cough, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, and a high fever. If you exhibit these symptoms you are advised to seek medical help and to be tested for COVID 19.
